The Rise and Fall of Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones

There was a time a couple of years ago that Pacman Jones was one of the most exciting up and comers in the NFL.

I remember whenever my friends and I played Madden, we would all fight for Pacman on our Fantasy Draft teams.

And why wouldn’t we?

He was a great kick/punt returner, showed a lot of potential at cornerback, had awesome dreads and his name was Pacman.

Jones recently made headlines by almost playing in the Canadian Football League.

Personally, I don’t have anything against the CFL. This was the league, after all, that gave Warren Moon, Jeff Garcia and Doug Flutie a shot before they made into the NFL. However, more recently, it’s shaping up to be a league for NFL rejects. Remember when Ricky Williams had to play in the CFL before returning to the Dolphins?

I guess they want to clean up their act, because the day after that announcement, the Winnepeg Blue Bombers issued a statement saying they would end their pursuit of Pacman.

So how did Pacman Jones go from one of the most promising youngsters in the NFL to getting dumped by the CFL?

It all began in 2005, when Jones was drafted 6th overall by the Titans. Before he even joined the team he missed most of training camp, because negotiations broke down between him and the Titans.

No. It wasn’t an issue over money. It was actually his off the field hi jinks. This included a fight while he was still in school at West Virginia that landed him on probation. Little did we know that this was a sign of things to come.

Things obviously worked out between the two camps. His rookie year wasn’t spectacular, he had over 40 tackles, 10 pass deflections and 1,399 return yards.

But Jones let loose during the 2006 season. 62 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, 12 deflections, 4 picks and 440 punt return yards. After that kind of season, we we all thinking that this dude was going to have a great NFL career.

Then, it went all downhill.

Off the field Pacman was a nightmare for the Titans, and the league.

Back in July of 2005 he was arrested for assault and vandalism at a nightclub in Nashville, which resulted in a ninety day probation.

In 2006, he had a couple of altercations with some ladies. In August he was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, after he spit in a woman’s face because he believed that she stole his wallet. Then in October in spit in a another woman’s face. The Titans then decided to suspend Jones for one game.

As if things couldn’t get worse for Pacman, there were some shooting incidents.

There was of course the February 2007 incident at the Minxx in Vegas. Turns out Pacman got mad at a stripper for picking up his cash without his permission after he and Nelly made it rain. Pacman reportedly grabbed the woman’s hair and slammed her head to the stage.

He then threatened a security guard’s life after the guard intervened. To cap off an eventful night, someone in Jones’ entourage returned with a gun, fired into a crowd and wounded three people.

To avoid some jail time, Jones made a plea deal. This included a year of probation and 200 hours of community service.

Then in June 2007, a shooting in Atlanta left police wanting to ask Pacman questions, after his entourage was involved, but it turned out that he wasn’t present and no charges were filed against him. At least that’s one break.

And, I almost forgot those little incidents with marijuna and cocaine.

On April 13, 2007 Roger Goodell suspended Pacman for the entire 2007 season, something that hasn’t happened in the NFL in 44 years.

With nothing to do, and probably needing the money, Jones ventured into the world of profesional wrestling. On August 6, 2007 he struck a deal with TNA. However, since he was still under contract with the Titans, he wasn’t allowed to actually get in the ring. I’m not really sure what he did in TNA, but he did manage to win the World Tag Team Championship.

Unfortunately, his contract was not renewed.

On April 23, 2008 Pacman was traded to the Cowboys for a fourth round pick. By June, he was allowed to participate in organized team activities and was allowed to play during the regular season. Things were starting to look up for Pacman.

Then he a pulled a Pacman.

On October 8, Jones had an altercation with his bodyguard at a Dallas hotel. He was suspened by the NFL for four games.

He then suffered a neck injury against the Steelers on December 7, but somehow, played in the final game of the season against the Eagles.

After the Cowboys learned of the Atlanta shooting incident, they released Jones on January 7, 2009.

But unlike Michael Vick, I’m not sure if Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones deserves another chance. It seems like everytime he has a chance to redeem himself, he just screws it up. Maybe this time he learned his lesson.

The reason Pacman can't play in the CFL is not because teams do not want him it has more to do with the customs will not let him into the country due to all his gun crimes

  2. Most people don't get a chance to live their dreams, he had many, so be it.

  3. facman says:

he a fucking loser and a dirtbag.
he should never get to play ANYWHERE again… well, except maybe on the prison team.

  4. Zach says:

First of all the CFL is not a league full of NFL rejects. If the author of this article had done some research he/she would have seen that it is a league that runs very well without cramming its rosters with NFL rejects. However, the talents that some of these players posses is enough to tempt some GMs to sign them. Also if the author could spell Winnipeg properly it would be appreciated. Secondly, Pacman was ready to come to the CFL. His passport was ready but after he made a fool of himself on ustream (mistaking the CFL for the UFL and guaranteeing two touchdowns per game) the Bombers decided not to sign him. He is a moron and nothing else.

This guy is stupid idiot. How can you possibly make that many mistakes in life, he deserves what he got A CAREER OUT OF THE NFL. GUY IS MORON IF YOU ASK ME!!!!!!!
