Despite signing a five-year contract extension with ESPN, which began in September of 2012, the rumors of Jon Gruden returning to a coaching position remain.

Gruden’s name has been mentioned numerous times as Andy Reid’s successor in Philly. But, is usually more wishful thinking for fans. More recently, he was said to become the new head coach of the University of Tennessee, which also came with a Browns’ ownership stake. However, there’s a new report of Gruden returning to a former team.

According to ProFootballWeekly’s Hub Arkush, Gruden and the Raiders are in talks to bring him back as head coach in Oakland. But, is there any truth to this latest gossip regarding Gruden?

Last week, Raiders owner Mark Davis told first-year coach Dennis Allen that the team’s 3-8 record wasn’t “good enough”. Then again, what’s new in Oakland? It seems that after Gruden’s departure back in 2001 there’s been a new Raiders head coach every season. While that’s a bit of hyperbole, it can be argued that Gruden was at least the city’s favorite coach since the retirement of Tom Flores in 1987.

However, Gruden has stated that he’s happy with his Monday Night Football gig, but it’s obvious that the man still has some coaching left in him. So, if the price is right, would he really turn down a large contract to return to head-coaching duties? And, maybe Gruden will get overwhelmed with nostalgia when he returns to Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium this weekend to participate in the 10-year celebration of the 2002 NFL champions. That visit could ignite a fire to lead another franchise to a Super Bowl.

Gruden has a 95-81 career head-coaching record, which isn’t exactly the best record on paper. But, he does have a Super Bowl ring, which always goes a long way. There will also be plenty of head coaching openings after the 2012-2013 NFL season. And, until those openings are filled, expect Gruden’s name to be mentioned as the new head coach in Philly, and maybe even Dallas and San Diego. Many of it will be rumors and wishful thinking, but would it really hurt any of these organizations to at least reach out to Jon Gruden?
