A new analysis suggests that Apple could be successful if they will release an iPad Mini. This could attract consumers from the education sector, especially the students who are looking for a lighter and more portable tablet.
Addressing Market Opportunity
Following the report that Apple is gearing up for an “exciting” September, Topeka Capital Markets’ Brian White pointed out that the company will launch the iPad Mini during this time. He also added that the iPad maker could expand its market by offering a smaller tablet.
The device could help them attract more price sensitive consumers when the iPad Mini is released at a lower price point. This could also offer an alternative for those who want a smaller tablet. In fact, ChangeWave Research released a survey yesterday, showing that 14 percent of North American consumers are “somewhat likely” to buy a smaller iPad. On the other hand, 3 percent are “very likely” to purchase an iPad Mini.
The study only shows that customers have high interest in a 7-inch tablet. In addition, Dr. Paul Carton, the firm’s vice president of research, pointed out that an iPad Mini could be a great competitor for Apple’s own full-sized tablet that is currently dominating the market.
“At the moment, the greatest competitive threat to the new iPad could well be the iPad Mini—which doesn’t exist yet, but even if it does, it toll will be made by Apple.”
Popularity of iPad Mini Rumors
Rumors of a smaller iPad have endured for years, even though the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs have panned 7-inch tablets. According to him, manufacturers of smaller tablets would need to include sandpaper when they ship the devices. That’s because users need to file down their fingers in order to hit smaller targets on the screen.
However, it gained traction and became specific in recent months. There were also claims that Apple is experimenting with a prototype iPad that features a 7.85-inch screen. The device is said to boast a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, the same resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2. Thus, developers will be able to run their apps on the iPad Mini without any modification. Moreover, it could still be branded as Retina Display.
Although it is yet to be confirmed whether the smaller tablet will see the light of day, Apple is allegedly preparing to release 6 million units during the third quarter of this year. It will be priced at around $249-$299, and it is expect to compete against upcoming Windows 8 tablet.
