Although Apple’s US website is still showing carrier-specific iPhone 5, a quick search result reveals the pricing of their factory unlocked units. As of the moment, it is advertised that the company’s latest smartphone can be delivered within three to four weeks, while a factory unlocked version will be available later this year.
Unlocked iPhone 5 Units: Anything But Official
The news was first discovered by AppleInsider reader Dhaval Dinani. He also confirmed independently that the alleged unlock iPhone 5 units are anything but official.
It was also speculated that the search result could be a placeholder in Apple’s database. However, the smartphone’s prices are consistent with the identical models available in Canada, where all iPhone models are unlocked.
The information is not listed anywhere on the site, although a query for “iPhone 5 factory unlocked” reveals the said Apple Store results. It also comes in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB capacities, which are priced at $649, $749 and $849 respectively. Prices for both GSM and CDMA models, on the other hand, can be found by adding the storage size to the search query.
It is unclear how long the alleged search result has been on the Apple website, but a previous report shows an iPhone comparison page on Apple Online Store. The page shows the prices for unlocked units bound for US and Canada.
The news kicked in last September, just hours before the company opened their pre-orders for the iPhone 5. Moreover, the prices quoted in the said report are in line with the recent search results found on the company’s US website.
However, tech and gadget news site The Verge confirmed that the handsets won’t be available in North America upon launch. The online publication added that it is the Cupertino-based company standard operating procedure, as they reserve the unlocked iPhones for countries where it is the only model available.
Availability and Compatibility
As of the moment, Apple doesn’t offer a factory unlocked version of the iPhone 5. However, there were reports that the company’s CDMA version available at Verizon is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile’s GSM network.
In relation to this, it was claimed that an AT&T version of can be unlocked to operate on T-Mobile’s network using the iTunes reset and nano-SIM card replacement.
Apple is expected to release the unlocked version of iPhone 5 once its worldwide launch is complete. It will also be available as soon as the smartphone’s supply normalizes.
