Apple’s Taiwan-based manufacturing partner, Foxconn, is rumored to be planning to build manufacturing plants in America. Moreover, the firm is said to be evaluating sites in Los Angeles, California and Detroit, Michigan.

Foxconn in America

According to a report published by DigiTimes, Foxconn is planning to establish manufacturing firms in America. There were also claims that the purported plant will work on building LCD television sets. Citing “market watchers,” the online publication said that the firm will not be used to build Apple products. That’s because the work is “rather complicated”.

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) reportedly plans to establish manufacturing plants in the US and currently conducting evaluations in cities such as Detroit and Los Angeles, according to market watchers. Since the manufacturing of Apple’s products is rather complicated, the market watchers expect the rumored plants to focus on LCD TV production, which can be highly automated and easier.

Rumors of Foxconn’s expansion to America came at the heels of the company’s public event. According to CEO Terry Gou, they are planning to host a training program for US-based engineers. In cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the manufacturing company hopes to bring American engineers to Taiwan or China and get them involved in product design and manufacturing.

Based in Taiwan, Foxconn has a number of manufacturing plants in China. This is where they assemble devices from large electronics companies like Apple. However, the iPhone maker has come under fire from critics who don’t favor Foxconn’s use of cheap labor.

American-Made Apple Products

In relation to this, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was asked earlier this year about the possibility of manufacturing their products in America. He said that he would want for the iDevices to be manufactured stateside, but he took note of the critics who have placed “intense focus” on final assembly.

What they didn’t know is that there is a great deal more to creating a device than just that one step. In an interview with All Things Digital co-host Kara Swisher, the CEO said:

We decided a decade ago that there were some things that we could do ourselves better than anyone. But other things, we decided we shouldn’t put our own efforts into.

Furthermore, AppleInsider reported in July that some of the Cupertino-based company’s key suppliers have started increasing their US-based production. However, these companies frequently assemble components around the world. That’s why it is unknown just how much of a device like Apple’s iPhone is truly made in America.

In the recent years, Foxconn has also expanded their operation outside of China and the Far East. They established a new plant in Brazil, which now manufactures Apple’s iPad.
