Last Monday, Apple released their iOS 6.1.1 software update to iPhone 4S owners to address a number of bugs. Prior to this, iPhone 4S users encountered a number of issues after the release of iOS 6.1.

iOS 6.1.1: Addressing Cellular Performance Issues

As Apple posted on a knowledge base article, the iOS 6.1.1 “fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S.”

Two weeks after the release of iOS 6.1, a number of iPhone 4S user started complaining about battery drain and overheating issues, which is possibly related to the software update. Moreover, British wireless carrier Vodafone UK sent out a warning to iPhone 4S users, telling them not to update their mobile operating system. That’s because the latest version was determined to cause 3G performance problems.

The carrier particularly noted that iOS 6.1 was creating intermittent problems with iPhone 4S models. This caused the handsets to experience 3G-related issues with making calls, sending text messages, and accessing the company’s data network.

However, support forums indicate that the problem may not be limited to iPhone 4S. One iPhone 5 owner saw his battery drain 35 percent over night. No software update was issued for the iPhone 5 despite reports that the iOS 6.1 affected the smartphone negatively. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the company is preparing a software update for their latest smartphone model separately.

The software update is available as a 968 MB direct download, or as an over-the-air download. However, it is only available for the iPhone 4S.
