Injustice: Gods Amongst Us, is the next fighting game from NetherRealm Studios (responsible for the 2011 reboot of the Mortal Kombat series). The game stars 20+ characters from the DC Universe battling it out against classic comic book backdrops like the Fortress of Solitude. NetherRealm Studios released a new promotional video today that looks at the development of the game, and how they want to tailor their style to fit the DC Comics Universe.
Injustice will use the Unreal Engine 3 and the brains behind the Mortal Kombat series, Ed Boon, in hopes of creating a first rate DC Comics fighting game. DC’s previous foray into fighting games, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, fell short in the minds of a lot of players due to the restrictions on fatalities for DC characters and elimination of other gory elements that are trademarks of the Mortal Kombat series.
As with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, DC Comics writers Jimmy Palmioitti and Justin Gray serve as story consultants to ensure that Injustice maintains the feel and characterization of the DC universe.
Going back to a 2D arena ala Street Fighter instead of the roving 3D combat arena of the Mortal Kombat series, Injustice will feature extensively interactive 3D backgrounds, a trademark of the Mortal Kombat franchise. In addition to the DC Trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, Injustice will allow you to step into the shoes of the Joker, Nightwing, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and Cyborg, with costumes taken from their New 52 comic versions. The playable environments of Injustice, however, might just be the star of the game.
Each playing area will have a variety of interactive pitfalls that intertwine with the DC Universe. A kick in the right area might send your for hurtling through the Phantom Zone or through ten floors of the Daily Planet.
The controls have been modified from the Mortal Kombat system as well, with the back button eliminated and a character specific interaction button added in hopes of increasing the connection to the DC Universe. New playable characters are still being announced, like the recently unveiled Deathstroke: The Terminator, who you can check out below.
Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in April 2013. Gamestop has one particularly cool exclusive downloadable content pack for those pre-ordering from the North American retailer. The exclusive DLC is taken from Mark Millar’s (Kick-Ass) Superman: Red Son story, giving an alternate set of Soviet-inspired skins for Superman and additional missions. I love Red Son, so I’ll be pre-ordering my copy.
