Following the auction wherein THQ’s studios and its properties were sold off, the company announced that they have failed to find any buyers for Vigil Entertainment or the Darksiders series. However, there were reports that Crytek, the developer of Crysis, took Vigil Entertainment’s “core team” to form Crytek USA.

Last month, the company announced that they will be opening a new studio in Austin, Texas. Previously dubbed as the Crytek USA Corp., the studio will be their ninth, and it’s also their first studio in the US.

In relation to this, there were reports that the studio will be headed by “David Adams and his team of 35 experienced developers.” The speculations were even backed by THQ President Jason Rubin’s tweet:

Great news for Vigil, at least the core team: http://goo.gl/LaQKt. Thanks to Crytek for saving as much as they could of a fantastic team.

The decision was made within the day only, which explains the sudden announcement. In relation to this, CEO Cervat Yerli revealed that the Crytek founders did not interview any of the Vigil Entertainment employees nor look at their resumes.

Sticking Together Despite “Too Many Unknowns”

Prior to this, there were claims that Crytek considered bidding on Vigil Entertainment. However, they’ve decided against it because of “too many unknowns”.

But Yerli talked with Vigil Entertainment’s founder David Adams over the phone and liked him. He flew to Austin, Texas afterwards to meet Adams and the rest of the team. The meeting showed an interest in sticking together, which cemented the decision. As Yerli stated:

Only a few people within Crytek even knew this was happening because we didn’t have time to update people. So it was a surprise to a lot of people within Crytek.

However, the CEO pointed out that they are not interested in continuing the Darksiders series, as well as pursuing the rights for it. Instead, Crytek USA will work on something that will fit the company’s overall strategy. It is also obvious that whatever the studio will be working on will use the CryEngine technology. Yerli further revealed:

It’s not like we set the team on a specific game concept. They’re actually going to work on what David and the team identifies as what they want to do. Right now, they just know what the strategy of Crytek is and the framework we need to satisfy, but none of that drives what the game is about.

Meanwhile, most of the newly formed studio is on vacation.
