Why You Won’t Be Getting Laid Anytime Soon On Craigslist

When Craig Newmark started a little service simplistically known as Craigslist in 1995, he probably never thought of the controversies that it would ignite.

Newmark

The site, which reaches over 20 billion page views a month, has always maintained that it doesn’t want to maximize profits, it just wants to help people find everything that they need, like apartments, cars, jobs and dates.

However, it was inevitable that deviants would begin to run a muck on a site that only employs around 30 people.

As the Internet became more accessible, and Craigslist began popping up in about 700 cities in 70 different countries, people looking to get some, and crooks wanting to exploit them, came out of the woodwork.

It’s no secret that Craigslist has faced recent battles, like guys stalking girls and killing them.

This is also the case for guys looking for a one night stand. In fact, because of so many incidents in the erotic services category, the site shut it down, and created the adult service category in 2009 to rectify these problems. However, that hasn’t really changed things all that much.

So, if you’re browsing through Craigslist’s adult section, here are some of the popular scams that are bound to end up leaving you broke, battered, and embarrassed, instead of getting laid.

Getting Your Identity Stolen

Identity theft

Nowadays, this could happen any and everywhere, but here’s how it happened when some guys were responding to sex ads on Craigslist.

First up is a 23 year old from Minneapolis. Our victim was looking for sex partners and got a couple (a guy and a girl) to come to his place, which would have been not as bad if it were two girls. The three were fooling around until the other man asked to go to the bathroom. I think we can all see where this is heading.

After the man returned from the bathroom, he and his partner in crime said they had to jet. The 23 year old noticed not too long afterwards that his wallet was gone. A few weeks later his identity had been stolen too, which included getting a bank account in his name and using his credit cards to buy a computer.

Next up is another case in Minnesota (note to self, do not go to Minnesota and respond to any sex ads).

Last year a couple were arrested for doing similar crimes like our first example. The couple would place ads and meet the responders at a hotel or the victim’s place. The couple then resorted to picking the pockets of their targets. They would then use that person’s info to drain their bank accounts and steal their identities to buy things like prescription meds.

Escorts Gone Wrong

escort

Here’s an unfortunate story about a 69 year old guy who got robbed after hiring an escort.

The man had 21 year old Lindsey Jacobson come to his house for a good time. As the two were outside soaking in the man’s hot tube, Jacobson said she had to go inside to change her clothes. After she didn’t come back for a while, the man got suspicious and went in to look for her. Instead of finding his date for the night, he discovered a man robbing his joint.

The robber had a gun, and when the victim went to take it away, he was beaten in the head several times instead. When all was said and done, the couple took the man’s wallet and some jewelry.

The worst thing about this robbery was that it didn’t happen to some old horn dog. The victim said that he hired the escort because he wanted companionship to fill the void of his wife who had passed away nine years earlier.

In Florida, a 17 year old and 18 year pair of girls posted fake ads on Craigslist for sexual encounters and massages. It started out as a simple prostitution ring, but eventually, it turned into our favorite scam, having some dudes show up to rob the victims.

You’re Actually Hiring a Prostitute

This isn’t all that shocking, since Craigslist is a perfect place for prostitutes, and customers, to hook up. I think most of us are all aware of this fact. However, if you’re looking to pay for sex, don’t do it on Craigslist, as cops are on scoping it out, or you could be blackmailed.

Speaking of extortion, in California the police busted up a sex extortion ring. Clients were threatened with exposing their habits if they didn’t fork over some more cash.

Besides extortion, cops are cracking down on Craigslist prostitutes as well.

In Long Island, a mother/daughter team were arrested for the second time on prostitution charges, as they were previously caught before in Bakersfield, California. Now that’s some family bonding.

Here’s another favorite. A man in the Bronx was caught pimping out his wife. You may be asking yourself, would a guy pimp out his wife? Because he lost his job as a graphic designer? Let me rephrase this. A graphic designer was arrested for pimping out his wife.

Of course there could be hundreds more that I could mention, but you have been warned. Everywhere from Tampa to Michigan to Alaska, Craigslist prostitution rings are being broken up. And not even fronting as giving “golf lessons” will work anymore.

Underage Trouble

drunkkids

Getting caught with a prostitute is one thing. Getting caught with an underage girl, well, that’s a whole other set of problems that you don’t want.

In Minneapolis, again, a woman was arrested for pimping out high school age girls. She got caught when one of her employees told the coppers that she was recruiting more underage girls to work as prostitutes.

In Eugene, Oregon, this is becoming a bit of an epidemic. Police have found around ten girls, ranging in ages from 14-17, posting sex for money ads on Craigslist.

Then there’s the Army private from Fort Meade that got girls to become prostitutes for him and his business partners. One of which was 16. They would ship girls from Ohio to Maryland, and run the business from an apartment. They then used the profits to buy ecstasy. Yup, that’s some real American heroes right there.

You’re Being Redirected to a Pay Site/Service

phone sex

Another non-shocker when it comes to the Craigslist adult section, but hey, sometimes we just can’t help ourselves.

There have been numerous incidents of guys looking to get to laid, only to be left with a little less cash in their bank accounts after responding to a Craigslist ad.

It’s simple, actually.

A dude responds to an ad of what he thinks is a girl looking for a good time too. When he responds, he is then redirected to a paysite that asks for credit card info. If you’re a sucker, then you’ll keep going. Eventually, you’ll be texting and/or talking to a “hottie” for $50 a pop.

It’s a Prank

Yup, this was bound to happen too.

We all know that some ass clown, living in his mom’s basement, would have some fun at our horny expenses.

Here’s more on the Jason Fortuny Craigslist Experiment.

Then there’s this yakster, who explains how he’s going to prank single men in San Fran, just to see exactly how far they’ll go to get laid.

So remember, if you respond to a personal ad on Craigslist for a sex partner, it’s probably too good to be true. It’s either a prostitute, escort, cop, underage girl, a front for a paysite or someone pulling your chain. Just use common sense, pull yourself away from the computer screen and go back to the old reliable bar scene and street corners instead.

'amok', the word is 'amok'. not 'a muck'.

  2. P P says:

    run a muck?

  3. Guest says:

Great article, one small quibble – it should be "run amok" not "run a muck."

  4. sad says:

Yeah, the world is a messed up place.
It is no wonder that people everywhere are …….ah… never mind : (

  5. amok says:

    It's "run amok" not "run a muck"…

  6. Omnichronos says:

Yeah stuff happens, but I get laid ALL THE TIME from craigslist. I answer a lot of ads but the quickest way is to post your own ad. I have had sex over 30 times from craigslist. Of course I'm not looking for prostitutes, just consensual free sex.

    • chad says:

Most of the time I`m just referred to sites thats ask for my credit info or money.
You must get all ace cards.

    • Anonymous says:

Yeah I tried it just last night and it worked out fine, you just gotta be smart and not do stupid shit like invite them to your house and stuff. Make sure they're not asking you to pay, and meet somewhere where neither of you can get robbed (like a park or something). Also, leave your damn wallet at home, why would you even bring that? It works, just think smart.

  7. Skeptical Geezer says:

American media hypocritically makes money off sex workers through these exploitation stories about the horrendous risks of prostitution. I am only surprised that STDs weren't thrown into the story for extra scare value.

  8. I spy says:

Slamming Craigslist is a new low, lol. I know a lot of people who got good connections out of Craigslist, even several marriages. I met someone just a few months ago through Craigslist, got some great sex out of it even if the relationship didn’t work out.

So the thesis of your argument should be reversed: MOST encounters on Craigslist will be successful and legit (if you’re not stupid). It’s pretty rare to have a bad experience.

  9. Matt says:

    It's "amok", not "a muck".

  10. Nico says:

geee you americans are sick. In europe, Prositution is tolerated and even permitted. This enables people who want sex to get it, and prostitues can have a certain protection (this should be much improved though)… Because from one side all ads show beautiful women, with sex in movies bcoming the norm etc…., and on the other hand any adult man willing to meet an adult woman for sex is a pervert…..Willing to have sex is NOT being a pervert!

    • lola171 says:

Jeez were the hell in europe are you from, the only place in europe were fucking people for money is ok is in holland. I agree that prositiutes need protection, i also agree that wanting sex dosnt make you a pervert, what i dont agree with is that people have to sell their own bodies for money and i dont agree with people who would pay for sex. Your using someones body as toliet its disgracful, Humans develped emotions for a reason, we developed love for a reason. That reason being that our offspring would survive better if they could reley on parents who stuck to together, you reamber what children are dont you? The reason why we mate in the first place. I belive there is room for sex outside of procreation and marriage and relationships, but i have a problem with it when the two consenting ADULTS have two different motives for the sexual act, if one is seeking sexual gratification and the other is seeking money or drugs thats horrible. And instead of legalising prostitiutaion wouldnt it be better if we could find a way for everyone to live peacfully without having to use there bodies as a dipository…

    • lola171 says:

I dunno, i know a girl who was a prostitite and let me tell you its all well and good for the men who cum and go as they please but everytime she undresses she loses a part of herself… its aful.

And dont even get me started on craigslist casual encounters, some of the ads ive read are sick,

"Looking to impregnate a black woman, NO STRINGS ATTATCHED AFTERWARDS".. what the fuck is that?

"Looking for a girl who as recently split up with her boyfriend.. must still be on the pill"

"Looking for some ski in exchange for bjs"

Its horrible how people can let their libido drive them to such lengths, jesus have some self control for the love of god.

On a final note, i am from europe not america, but i disagree with your whole geeeeeeeee americans are sickos, how can you defend and opinon you have when you make and offhanded remark like that?, i agree SOME americans are sick the way SOME people are sick everywhere, you cant just lump everyone into a catogory like that, there are different situations to take into consdieration, this is not a black and white issue, think outside the box you unbelivable fool.

  12. DjH says:

Umm.. Both amok and amuck / a muck are proper. The Websters Dictionary states that amuck is a variation on amok. Even in the wiki link that someone posted it says "(also spelled amuck or amuk)". Don't try to argue with the difference between "amuck" and "a muck"

  13. chiggers says:

it can also be spelt 'amuck'.

  14. Riot says:

HOLY SHIT! Hopefully someone told you that you misspelled "amok" because APPARENTLY that's all anyone read from this article.

Good read, thanks for the amusing links.. =]

  15. Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.

  16. Most of the women ads on craigslist are really scams. Believe it or not, it's about 90% of them it seems. You will notice that when their is a smoking hottie on their that wants to hook up and she either decribes herself as hot or has a picture, that you will always get redirected to Age verification site that only verifies through credit cards. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to believe that credit cards are the only way to verify your age. You know it's a scam when they tell you it's a must because they do not want to run into an underage kid and get in trouble.

  17. Myles Traill says:

Anyway, this is a fascinating take on this topic. Please update this blog regularly! Also, do you allow your readers to send in topics they would like to personally ask you about? Right now I have a specific question on this subject because I am going through a difficult situation with a girl I like and I am not sure how to move forward. I’d love to ask for your comments…or perhaps someone can suggest a book that I ought to read?

  18. Picture Attached says:

"So remember, if you respond to a personal ad on Craigslist for a sex partner, it’s probably too good to be true. Yes, there are truths to this article…but they are grossly exaggerated.

I have a humor website dedicated to meeting people from the casual encounters section of craigslist. I've made hundreds of posts, interviewed hundreds of people, and met dozens more. Those examples listed above can be spoted by anyone with an IQ greater than 10…as their responses and ads are blatantly obvious.

Want to know the real statistics for craigslist casual encounters…I made a blog post about it a few weeks ago. No bias…just actual facts from an actual person. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bmWTzBh6x6o/TCQ0SiltoXI

This guy just needs to get laid…and when he couldn't get a chick on craigslist either…he decided to write an article bashing it.

Men, women, and everyone else…YES, you can get laid using craigslist…just be smart about who you respond to, what you ask for, and know who you're meeting. It poses the same risk as match.com, meeting a blind date, or hooking up with someone from a bar. There are actual, normal, real people…even quite a few really really attractive ones who simply enjoy casual hot sex.

If you're interested in the other stats or my other humorous experiences…check out http://www.picture-attached.com. At least to make sure it wasn't you I wrote about.

  19. Joe says:

I got laid a few times off of Craigslist. I didn't pay for it, didn't get robbed, didn't get my "chain pulled." I know a few other people that go on Craigslist every now and then to get girls too. Never heard of a significant problem…except that the girls are more likely to flake. Not so bad.

  20. Classy Ad says:

I have gone on CL and met guys I usually post "car date" I never invite anyone over my home no more.
I almost had this huge guy rob me. Thank God I gave me good sex and I have the lobby video camera system on so he can see.
